Discovery Semiconductors, Inc., a leading supplier of optical receivers, test instruments, and sub-systems, has introduced a new optical coherent system product for 10G, 20G, and 40G networks at the SubOptic conference in Yokohama, Japan. The live demonstration of the new Kitty Hawk system showed error-free performance with a commercially available SONET integrated qualification system through an XFP client interface. At its facility in New Jersey, Discovery is setting up a complete SONET testbed for testing consumer applications, such as video content, using the new coherent system.
Mr. Abhay Joshi, President & CEO of Discovery Semiconductors, stated, "The top websites by traffic are google.com, facebook.com, youtube.com, yahoo.com, live.com, wikipedia.com, and baidu.com (source: Alexa, April 2010). A vast majority of Internet traffic is consumer oriented and largely multimedia. Our coherent system is geared towards these applications." Mr. Joshi added, "In the end, our goal is to design an intelligent system for an intelligent network, and not just a faster ‘dumb pipe.’"
The new Optical Coherent System supports D(Q)PSK and DP-D(Q)PSK modulation formats to achieve 10G, 20G, and 40G data rates at 10 Gbaud symbol rate for spectral efficiency up to 0.8 b/s/Hz for 50 GHz grid spacing. Kitty Hawk’s OSNR performance and built-in switchable electrical dispersion compensation give WDM system engineers new flexibility to upgrade networks. The system design does not require custom DSPs or analog-to-digital converters, so it is a quick and affordable upgrade for existing 2.5G and 10G networks.
Discovery Semiconductors is an industry leader in manufacturing ultrafast, high optical power handling InGaAs photodiodes, radio frequency over fiber optical receivers, balanced optical receivers and several other custom products for applications ranging from analog RF links to ultrafast digital communications. Discovery’s subsystems include Kitty Hawk, an ultra-fast Optical Coherent System.
